The client wanted 5 Birch Woodgrain Decks designed and painted with a continuous semi-abstract design. In my planning staged, I began by taking a picture of all 5 decks and then creating a black template to print and directly sketch on. After 5 or 6 sketches, I did this semi-final draft with marker and rescanned it.
It might feel like an extra step, but planning on paper can really keep you focused on your rebranding goals. Sometimes all the tools and options in illustrator and photoshop can really be distracting in the planning stages. Personally,it also feels good to have that blank piece of paper and physical object to manipulate.

Also, I like this font better.
Sometimes I don’t have the luxury of time. But that doesn’t mean sloppy work, maybe not the most original, but at least you attempt to stand out while still presenting the information clearly. 
It especially important when making xerox or copy machine flyers to always keep contrast. With contrast, you can make it seem like there is a lot more going on than their really is, while still presenting the information legibly.
For this personal project, I really wanted to make semi-accurate biological nomenclature. Wikipedia helped (as always). The Curiosities of Biological Nomenclature is a really great site I stumbled upon too, it really helped me feel more comfortable with my latin scientifc naming.
These monsters are all taken from my monster patterns. (1 and 2) Going to focus on acquatic species, more to come!

Final Version
Been staring at Olly Moss’ excellent body of work. It conjures up Saul Bass and Depatie-Freleng’s Pink Panther animated titles: bold but minimalistic pop elements. I couldn’t help but let it influence my weekly flyer making.
Many knives did not make the cut. (Get it!) However, I now have an extensive jpeg collection of knives of all shapes, sizes, and sharps.
